Abstract
The original algorithms – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – have for centuries been the foremost example of both self-evidence (2+2=4) and also mental drudgery. With the rise of Big Calculation by machines in the early twentieth century, the nature of algorithms changed – and so did the kind of intelligence needed to use them.
