What do we research?
Within the humanities, approaches may differ but human beings, human products and human cultures are always central. Our research aims to provide insight into how our attitudes and our knowledge are tied up with our time and our environment and also an understanding of the human and cultural aspects of social development.
The humanities cover a wide range of disciplines: history, philosophy, literature, archaeology, gender studies, fine arts, ethnology, music, library and information studies etc.
Our research may focus upon individual items, for example a work of art, or upon general social phenomena. Within the humanities, research is being done into Sweden’s cultural heritage. The interpretation, understanding and experience of texts, images, music etc. are important tools for our researchers.
Within the faculty, researchers co-operate on multi-disciplinary research projects – so-called research nodes. The purpose of these nodes is to reinforce thematic and multi-disciplinary collaboration within the faculty and increase interaction both between different units and between teaching and research.
The Faculty of Arts offers third cycle education within 16 disciplines. The departments within the faculty collaborate to offer our PhD students a creative educational environment characterised by scientific depth, interdisciplinary breadth and excellent quality.
Within the disciplinary domain there are a number of research forums, which set out from cultural and geographical areas. Here researchers who take an interest in the area meet.
Doctores honoris causa
Honorary doctoral degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals who have made an outstanding academic contribution or in some other way promoted research at the University. Each year, the faculty board has the opportunity to appoint one or more honorary doctors.
